Herters duck decoys have been around for many years. They started manufacturing decoys in the 1930s and still have a line today. The main company went bankrupt in 1981 but the decoy lived on. They have made decoys out of many materials.
A duck decoy started out as a simple form of wood shaped to look like a duck. Hunters set these up in a pattern in the water to attract ducks. Decoys were fitted with a weight and cord that held them in place. This weight would sink to the bottom and pull the cord tight keeping the decoy in a certain spot on top of the water. The hunter would stay close but conceal himself with reeds or other items. Later they would build a structure known as a blind to hide in. Duck calls were also used in the attracting process. When the ducks would fly close or land in the decoys the hunter would shoot them. Later a law was made where you could not shoot sitting ducks. There are some species of ducks that are easier to decoy then others but most ducks will at least buzz by a good display of decoys.
The Herter company started out making decoys out of wood. They made these for several years and in the 1950s they had a cork decoy line. They experimented with other materials like foam and finally plastic. The foam decoys were lightweight but easily damaged carrying them or storing. Plastic molded decoys are the greatest advancement in the duck decoy line. These are gaining many details that make them life like. The paint alone can fool most ducks into flying close. Herters duck decoys have battled some tough times but still bring you a line of quality, inexpensive decoys. The paint might wear a little getting banged around in bags and boats but they will give you hunting enjoyment for years.
