Decorate Your Home Based On Your Style

Filed under: House and Home, Interiors

You don’t have to let anyone tell you how you should decorate your home. If a small accent piece stands out and appeals to your idea of good taste then you should feel free to buy it and display it. Some pieces will give you more than the simple pleasure of owning something that looks good.

Table lamps are multi-dimensional pieces of furniture that not only give you the ability to add decorative style to a room but they also serve as a valuable light source too. When placed strategically around a room they can provide some much needed task lighting in one part of the room while another lamp can create an ambience that makes the room feel more inviting.

In a way you could say they serve the same kind of purpose as a stair runner rug or door mats in that they have decorative appeal that will add to the room’s décor but they also serve a functional purpose.

Different types of lamps can be used for different lighting purposes in the room. Some lamps are suitable as general lighting in the room, large enough to throw enough light for the entire room. Other lamps are more directional and should only be used as task or accent lighting the light is more enclosed and is only meant for close or intimate work.

This is one of the selling points of putting table lamps around the rooms in which you will be most frequently using. They cover a range of lighting needs and, at the same time, help to give the room the ambience required to help make it more comfortable. You could place a brass table lamp on one side of the room giving the hint of a more traditional feeling to the room while placing a more modern chrome floor lamp in the corner to provide a reading area yet you can still maintain the decorative integrity.

In the end the way you lay out the room and the pieces you use to decorate it will come down to a combination of personal taste and the opportunity of finding different pieces. Sometimes an unusual or appealing vase or statuette will jump out at you and beg you to buy it with its placement in the home becoming a reflection of your own personality.

Closet Storage Systems And Organizers

Closets are meant to store things. Unfortunately, some closets store too much, or jumble too many items together that would be better off somewhere else. A catchall closet is hard to get into, hard to find things in, and depressing to look at. Not being able to find needed clothing or accessories can waste valuable time when trying to get out the door in the morning.

A good solution to this problem is a closet organizer. These are wonderful inventions that can make life less chaotic if used properly. Their purpose is to make a place to put everything out of the way in an easily accessible fashion. They can be stylish custom designed projects or simple assembly kits purchased at a department store. They can be used in bedrooms, garages, laundry rooms, pantries, linen closets and offices.

A random storage system can cause chaos and frustration when trying to find things. A Closet organizerscloset storage systems organizer can bring order back to a home. They can transform a jumbled closet into a well organized collection of shelves, hooks, racks, boxes and bins. Organized storage can prevent everything from being thrown in together. Each type of item can be sorted into a specific compartment or area that will easy to find. All of the space in a closet can be used efficiently without the fear of things tumbling out onto heads or feet.

Storage rooms that are overflowing may benefit from closet organizers, too. This can turn a room into one big walk in closet. If a closet is too small to accommodate an organizer, storage units can be used in the room to create a more streamlined area. Stand alone units, like wardrobes and armoires, can also be useful for storing off season or seldom used items of clothing.

However, clothes don’t just jump onto hangers, or accessories onto a shelf, by themselves. The system has to be maintained regularly. A closet organizer is only beneficial if it is used. But if it is used consistently, it can bring clutter and disorganization under control, and bring peace and order back to your daily routine.

Removing Stains from Carpets

Carpet stains are among the most common and most difficult to remove. Carpets are walked on every day, with various liquids, films and fluids being tracked and dripped onto them. This is compounded by the fact that a carpet cannot simply be thrown in the washing machine to be cleaned like the rest of the laundry. Some of the most common, and stubborn, carpet stains are blood and coffee, especially if they are aloud to soak into the fibers.

Removing Blood Stains from Carpets: Blood stain removal, especially dried blood stain removal, is especially difficult to handle on any fabric or surface. The carpet fibers immediately being to absorb the blood as soon as it hits, and once allowed to dry out, the stains form a bond which make the stain nigh impossible. A method to combat this is to pour a large amount of cold water over the stain. This will “freshen” the stain and make it substantially easier to clean. Blot up any excess water after this step. Meat tenderizer is a common household item typically applied to meats to break down the chemical bonds, making it tender and juicy. The tenderizer has a similar effect on blood stains. The chemicals in the tenderizer break down the protein in blood, making it easier to absorb and weakening its hold on the carpet fibers. Combine one part meat tenderizer with one part water to form a thick paste. Spread the paste over the stained area and wait for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the paste off with water, and pour club soda over the stain. Blot up any moisture, and the stain should be gone. If it still exists, repeat the process until it is completely gone or unnoticeable.

Coffee Carpet Stain Removal: Coffee stain removal, which is usually managed by simply throwing the stained fabric into the washing machine, is much more difficult to deal with on carpet. This is especially true with old, established stains. Begin by pouring a small amount of boiling water over the stain. This will dissolve the sugar that is binding the coffee to the carpet and make it much easier to clean. Blot up the remaining water afterward. Pour a small amount of liquid detergent over the stain and scrub it into the carpet with a damp sponge. Continue for several minutes, and then let stand for about 10 minutes. Pour club soda over the stain and blot any remaining moisture. Repeat this method until the stain is completely gone.

Getting Help For Plumbing Projects

Every year thousands of homeowners decide to forgo calling a plumber and handle their own plumbing projects around the house. This can be a great idea which can result in saving you tons of money. The problem is most people typically wind up elbows deep into a project when they get lost. Something may need to be removed which they have no idea how to do, or something might break and they have no idea how to replace it or fix it. Most of the commercials for the big box retailers show projects going smoothly with no hangups and they’re usually completed in record time. This is not, however, how the real world generally works. If you need help with your plumbing projects there are a few places in which you can turn.

Many people get their plumbing parts from a local home improvement store. If you run into problems you can often explain your problem to one of these sales associates and they can often help. This may not always be the case, but many of these associates have extensive knowledge in the area and can be a great resource.

Another great resource for finding help can be do-it-yourself forums. You may be able to ask your specific question on the forum; however, this may be a slow way to go about getting an answer. It may be a couple of days before someone gets around to answering your question. A better solution is to use the forum search button to try and find the answer to your question through the archives. Chances are someone has asked the very same question in the past.

Finally, searching for videos on your specific repair is a great way to find help. You can simply do a search for your specific problem, plus add video to the search, and it should turn up many results. You can also go to sites such as YouTube and search for your problem. Many companies and plumbers have uploaded step by step video instructions on common repairs around the home.

Buying an Energy Efficient Small Refrigerator

There are several ways to save money on appliances and there are some specific factors you want to keep in mind when shopping for a small refrigerator. These things are great because they can serve a great multitude of purposes beyond just keeping drinks cold and conveniently located. When buying cheap small refrigerators there are other ways to save money such as minimizing the energy consumption of the refrigerator you end up taking home. This begins by knowing exactly what you need from the unit.

The first and probably most effective factor is in knowing what size you need. Operating a refrigerator that is much larger in capacity than what you need will waste a lot of energy because the empty space needs to be kept cool which keeps the appliance running more often. This is the bottom line to being energy efficient and that is only using what you need. Most people do not get this far into the planning process of the purchase but it is a powerful consideration when coupled with the purchase of energy star small refrigerators that come with yellow labels comparing energy consumption of similar models.

Another feature that could save you a lot of money is a digital thermostat. While the plain knob with marked ticks is more common, a digital thermostat will do wonders in comparison because of the greater accuracy in reading and monitoring temperature levels. The greater accuracy minimizes the wasted energy needed to keep a space colder than it needs to be.

Most small refrigerators do not have their own freezer compartment and there is a little box that is the designated freezer in the interior of the refrigeration space. This is fine for most small fridges and it makes sense to have the freezer compartments top mounted. It is rare to see one that is bottom mounted but in case you do remember to avoid it. Being energy wise will not cost you anything now but will save you a lot of money throughout the life of the small refrigerator.
