Plumbing Tips For The Handywoman
When it’s time to fix a plumbing problem that is too simple to call a plumber and you are the only one around you just have to face it and charge ahead. Women do not grow up learning about plumbing most of the time. That’s ok! Just follow a few tips and you will be fine.
1. Be sure you are looking at the problem completely. You may find a part that is bad, but before you go on check if other parts need to be replaced to fix whatever is wrong.
2. Turn off the water! This is a must before you loosen any screws, pull any plugs or anything else the will cause water to come gushing out and drench everything around you. And you!
3. Gather enough towels or rags incase of a severe leak. You may have the water already turned off but there will be still standing water in pipes. As soon as you disconnect anything the extra water will pour out. All pipes must be drained before you start your project.
4. Once you have the faulty parts in hand take them with you to the store. Compare carefully and ask questions. In bathroom repairs size will matter. So will length, style and material used to make the part. Your dealer will help answer all your questions and find the correct parts you need.
5. Keep your receipt. If the part does not fit correctly you can return it to your local dealer and replace it for the right one.
6. Replace parts exactly as you took them off. Be sure you are hooking everything up correctly and all hook ups are tight and sound. If they are not then call your dealer and ask questions.
7. When you are done and proud of the job you did you are ready to turn on the water. Be sure to have those rags handy just in case a part pops off or the water leaks in new parts since the old ones have been replaced. Sometimes when the worst parts are replaced your problem will move to the next weakest point. Keep watch for at least a week for any new problems.
You have completed the job and everything works. If you got it right the fist time you can be proud of yourself. Like everything else plumbing takes practice and you learn a new trick each time you complete a new job.
